Respiratory Medicine, also known as pulmonology, focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases of the lungs and respiratory system — from COPD, asthma and interstitial lung disease to pneumonia, pleural disorders and respiratory failure.

Respiratory medicine, also known as pulmonology, focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases of the lungs and respiratory system. The department handles chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, interstitial lung diseases, pneumonia, pleural disorders and respiratory failure. Specialised care covers tuberculosis and sleep-disordered breathing such as sleep apnea. Key activities involve bronchoscopy, pulmonary function testing, imaging, and minimally invasive procedures for the airways, mediastinum and pleura — supporting both diagnostic sampling and therapeutic intervention, including in intensive care settings.
The department teaches 150 MBBS students admitted for the current year and is recognised for MD in Respiratory Medicine with 2 seats permitted and 2 admitted. Innovative practices include advanced interventional training in flexible bronchoscopy and thoracoscopy, technology-driven patient management using non-invasive ventilators and ventilators, and regular educational conferences and simulations.
Outpatient clinics run six days a week with specialty sessions for asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer and sleep apnea, alongside routine consultations, nebulisation, peak flow measurement and tuberculosis screening through NTEP clinics with daily CBNAAT testing. Inpatient wards carry high occupancy and are supported by a respiratory intensive care unit for critical cases, while theatre procedures include bronchoscopy, thoracoscopy and ultrasound-guided biopsy and aspiration.
