Department of Physiology

Dr M. Gopinath is a Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology with extensive experience in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, clinical physiology, academic administration and medical education innovation. He has served in progressive academic positions since 2013 and has been leading the Department of Physiology since May 2023.

  • Professor & Head, Department of Physiology, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College & Hospital.
  • Completed the Advanced Course in Medical Education (ACME) at the JIPMER Nodal Centre, Puducherry, building advanced expertise in Simulation based contemporary medical education.
  • Completed the Revised Basic Course in Medical Education Technologies and CISP, with active involvement in medical education initiatives.
  • Active Medical Education Unit (MEU) core team faculty, Clinical Skills & Simulation Lab core faculty, curricular sub-committee member and College Council member.
  • Resource person for Medical Education Unit programmes and skill-lab faculty training programmes for medical and allied health professionals.
  • Recognised for a strong interest and leadership in innovations in medical education, adaptive teaching–learning strategies, student-centred education and student care.
  • Clinical expertise in nerve conduction studies, autonomic function studies and pulmonary function testing; performed more than 350 nerve conduction studies at the institution.
  • Instrumental in establishing the Center for Clinical Physiology, one of the major clinical service centres of the institution.
  • Best Paper Award recipient for research presentations at national conferences.
  • Published research papers in national and international journals and contributed as co-author to the Handbook of Practical Instructions (Practical Physiology) by Paras Publishers
  • Reviewed chapters for Ross & Wilson Applied Anatomy and Applied Physiology in Health and Illness, 14th SAE.
  • Organising leadership in BMSeCON and several CME programmes, including Scientific Committee Head for BMSeCON 2020 and Organising Chairperson for BMSeCON 2023 and 2024.
  • Experience in teaching MBBS, MD, B.Sc. Nursing, BPT, BASLP and Biotechnology students.
  • Certified AHA BLS, ACLS and ASLS Lead Instructor and Jeeva Raksha ECLS Trainer/Instructor.
  • Recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award (2025) by Worthy Wellness Foundation

As Head of the Department, Dr Gopinath is keenly committed to strengthening a culture of innovation, student care and continuous improvement in teaching and learning. He promotes adaptive innovative T-L strategies, faculty development and meaningful integration of clinical physiology with undergraduate medical education. His leadership is characterised by taking responsibility, working collaboratively and steering the department forward with resilience and commitment despite operational and institutional challenges.

His professional interests include Neurophysiology, Respiratory Physiology and Medical Education, with a particular emphasis on innovative approaches that improve student engagement, learning outcomes and patient-centred care.
