Department of Cardiology

Clinical cardiology, non-invasive and invasive diagnostics, interventional and preventive cardiology, and cardiac rehabilitation — with emphasis on early detection, timely intervention and long-term cardiovascular risk reduction.

Department

Overview

"A leading academic and clinical unit serving patients across Puducherry and Tamil Nadu."

Cardiology is a specialised branch of medicine encompassing clinical cardiology, non-invasive and invasive diagnostics, interventional cardiology, preventive cardiology and cardiac rehabilitation. With the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related disorders, the department plays a crucial role in improving population health through early detection, timely intervention and long-term risk reduction. It offers outpatient, inpatient, emergency and diagnostic services for coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure, arrhythmias, valvular heart disease and cardiomyopathies.

The department supports undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, developing clinical skills through bedside teaching, case discussions and academic programmes. It contributes to research on cardiovascular risk factors, outcomes and preventive strategies, and to community health initiatives including cardiac screening camps and awareness programmes on lifestyle modification, hypertension, diabetes and heart disease prevention.

Services run through outpatient clinics, inpatient wards and emergency care. The department is equipped with electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, treadmill testing, Holter monitoring and ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Emergency cardiac care is available round the clock for acute coronary syndromes and life-threatening cardiac events, supported by coordinated care with critical care and anaesthesia teams. Continuity of care is maintained through regular follow-up clinics and digital record keeping.
