Medical Biotechnology is a rapidly evolving interdisciplinary field that integrates life sciences with advanced technologies to transform healthcare. It focuses on understanding biological systems at the molecular level and applying this knowledge to develop innovative solutions for disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The discipline encompasses key areas such as molecular biology, synthetic biology, genomics, proteomics, immunology, pharmacology, bioinformatics, and regenerative medicine. With the advent of personalized medicine, artificial intelligence, and omics technologies, medical biotechnology is at the forefront of modern healthcare innovation. Graduates in this field have diverse career opportunities in research and development, clinical diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology industries, public health, and entrepreneurship, contributing significantly to global healthcare advancement.

NEP 2020-aligned curriculum
An interdisciplinary department spanning molecular diagnostics, genomics, synthetic biology and regenerative medicine, taught alongside the attached hospital.
The Department of Medical Biotechnology at AVMC&H is dedicated to advancing education, research, and innovation in biomedical sciences. It serves as a dynamic platform for integrating scientific knowledge with clinical practice to address real-world healthcare challenges. Key contributions include academic excellence, offering NEP 2020-aligned B.Sc. (Hons), M.Sc., and Ph.D. programs with a strong foundation in core and advanced biotechnology domains; research and innovation, promoting interdisciplinary research in areas such as molecular diagnostics, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, synthetic biology, nanobiotechnology, and cancer biology; clinical integration, leveraging the attached hospital to provide students with real-time clinical exposure; skill development, emphasizing hands-on training in modern laboratory techniques including PCR, sequencing, cell culture, bioinformatics, and molecular diagnostics; and industry and career readiness, preparing students for research, diagnostics, pharmaceuticals, regulatory affairs, and entrepreneurship through internships, projects, and industry-oriented courses.
The Department adopts several innovative and student-centric practices to enhance learning and research outcomes. Integrated clinical–biotechnology learning has students interact directly with clinicians to understand disease pathology and correlate it with molecular mechanisms, promoting translational research skills. A research-driven curriculum gives early exposure to research methodology, project-based learning and dissertation work, encouraging innovation and critical thinking.
Hands-on advanced training covers molecular diagnostics (PCR, sequencing), genomics and proteomics analysis, cell culture and tissue engineering, and bioinformatics and computational biology, supported by a Research Laboratory with advanced instrumentation alongside specialized labs in genomics & proteomics, cell culture, microbiology and synthetic biology. Interdisciplinary teaching brings in artificial intelligence, synthetic biology, nanobiotechnology and omics technologies, while industrial visits, internships and workshops build skills in entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights, regulatory frameworks and GLP/GCP laboratory practice. A mentoring system and a flexible CBCS curriculum let students tailor electives to their career goals.

Focusing on the detection and characterization of infectious agents, development of rapid molecular and phage-based diagnostics, and nano-enabled therapeutic and antimicrobial strategies to address emerging infections and antimicrobial resistance.

Using population genetics to examine the distribution and dynamics of genetic variation within populations. Application of genetic variation to understand drug response and guide disease diagnosis, prevention, and treatment
Disease Epigenetics: Study of reversible gene expression changes like DNA methylation and histone modification that contribute to disease without altering DNA sequence. Computational Biology: Use of algorithms and bioinformatics tools to analyze and interpret complex biological data. Drug Discovery: Process of identifying and developing new therapeutic compounds targeting disease-specific mechanisms. Drug Repurposing: Identification of new therapeutic uses for existing drugs to reduce development time, cost, and risk.
Biomaterials for wound recovery focus on designing biocompatible materials like hydrogels and scaffolds that promote tissue regeneration and maintain an optimal healing environment. These materials can be functionalized with antimicrobial agents to prevent or control infections at the wound site. Advanced systems may respond to stimuli such as pH or enzymes for controlled drug release. Bioprocess technology supports this field by enabling the scalable production and optimization of bioactive compounds and polymers used in these biomaterials.
Development of engineered biological systems through the integration of chimeric two-component systems (TCSs) and synthetic genetic circuits to confer non-native signal detection and programmable cellular responses, coupled with the rational engineering of microbial platforms for enhanced biosynthesis of industry-relevant metabolites.
Application of molecular genetics techniques to analyse genetic polymorphisms and disease susceptibility, utilizing molecular markers (SNPs, microsatellites) for genotyping, population studies, and biomarker discovery, supported by PCR-based methods, sanger sequencing and bioinformatics analysis.
Integration of in silico, in vitro, and in vivo methodologies for comprehensive investigation of infectious diseases, encompassing pathogen genomics and proteomics, virulence determinant identification, and host–pathogen interaction analysis, with a focus on translational biomarker discovery and the development of targeted diagnostic and therapeutic interventions.

Dr. Irisappan Ganesh serves as an Associate Professor and Assistant Director (Research) with a specialisation in Synthetic Biology and Molecular Biotechnology. He holds a Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Environmental Engineering from the University of Ulsan, South Korea. Dr. Ganesh possesses 8 years of international postdoctoral experience at three distinguished South Korean institutions — Sungkyunkwan University, KRIBB, and POSTECH — focusing on microfluidic biosensors, metabolic pathway design, synthetic biology, and whole-cell biosensors.
His current research emphasises the engineering of biological systems for biomedical and environmental applications, including whole-cell biosensors, antimicrobial detection, and genetically encoded BioPROTACs for targeted cancer therapies. With 40 peer-reviewed publications, 597 citations, and an h-index of 14, Dr. Ganesh's multidisciplinary research spans synthetic biology, biomedical research, and environmental biotechnology. He also mentors doctoral, postgraduate, and undergraduate scholars and coordinates institutional research initiatives to promote innovation, collaboration, and research excellence.

These capabilities support researchers in molecular diagnostics, pathogen genomics, biomarker discovery, and precision medicine, enabling high-quality, reliable sequencing-based research.
