At AVMC Medical College, our cardiac surgery unit has been at the forefront of adopting and refining these approaches.

Historical Context and Evolution

The roots of minimally invasive cardiac surgery trace to the mid-1990s, when pioneering surgeons began exploring port-access and limited sternotomy approaches for mitral valve repair.

Foundational developments in the early era

Between 2000 and 2010, significant improvements in endoscopic instrumentation, video systems, and perfusion cannulation strategies gradually resolved the limitations of early techniques.

Current Approaches at AVMC

Our unit currently performs minimally invasive procedures across the full spectrum of cardiac pathology including mitral valve repair, tricuspid valve annuloplasty and mini-thoracotomy bypass procedures.

VATS Procedures

  • Video-assisted thoracoscopic cardiac surgery for valve procedures
  • Endoscopic saphenous vein harvesting for CABG
  • Minimally invasive Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation

Robotic Surgery

Robotic-assisted surgery has expanded the range of cases amenable to minimally invasive approach through enhanced dexterity and precision in small operative fields.
