Medical Gastroenterology

Medical Gastroenterology services were started in March 2016. The department has been receiving patients not only from the entire state of Pondicherry but also from the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Patients with various GI (Gastrointestinal) disorders, liver diseases, pancreatic diseases, and GI malignancies are being offered excellent curative as well as palliative care.

Endoscopic procedures are done daily and include diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy. Endoscopies are done as elective procedures and also for emergency GI problems like GI bleeds, foreign body ingestion, corrosive ingestion, cholangitis, etc. Therapeutic endoscopy procedures and interventions include treatment of bleeding ulcers, sclerotherapy, and banding for bleeding varices, dilatations for patients with advanced oesophageal malignancies, oesophageal stenting, foreign body removal, polypectomies, nasogastric and nasojejunal tube placements, etc.

The department currently has two well-qualified gastroenterologists and is also involved in various academic activities of teaching the UG and PG students and guiding the postgraduate students for their dissertations. In the future, our department is planning to start advanced endoscopic therapeutic procedures like endoscopic ultrasound and advanced ERCP (Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography) procedures to provide better care for needy patients.
