Department Of
Otorhinolaryngology
About Department of Otorhinolaryngology:
Quality in health care affects the timely, efficient, and patient-centred delivery of health care. Patient satisfaction is thus a proxy but a very effective indicator to measure the success of doctors and hospitals. Delivery of patient-focused care requires that we provide care in a particular way not just sometimes or usually, but always. As health care is, directly and indirectly, related to the education and training of aspiring doctors, we pay special attention to this for both our undergraduate and postgraduate students.
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology at AVMC focuses on the overall development of the student. The academics strictly comply with the latest competency-based medical education designed by the NMC. Students attend lectures, clinical postings with skill training and bedside clinical. They are assessed with written, oral and practical exams in the form of OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). Even in the wake of the pandemic, these were designed in the form of Google forms and online platforms for the benefit of the students. Students are divided into small groups and are monitored and trained by well-experienced faculty and modern resources.
We follow the competency-based medical education (CBME) curriculum which comprises regular conduct of Seminars, Journal Clubs, Case Discussion sessions and bedside clinical sessions. Students pass out with distinctions and medals at the university level. University theory question paper patterns, including MCQs (multiple choice questions), are discussed from time to time. Clinical assessment is done for case presentations (long and short cases, spotters), general viva and practical knowledge of instruments and x-rays. OSCE is also conducted from time to time for both formative and summative assessment.
A revision of the topics covered is done at the end of the academic year, and just prior to the final University exams. During this session, important points are recapitulated and emphasized, previous years’ question papers are discussed, students’ doubts and grievances addressed, feedback taken on the T-L methods so that future iterations would be more effective, and advice and instructions were given to the students on how to optimize their performance. This includes tips on writing concise answers with proper organization, clear headings, diagrams, tables, flowcharts and algorithms wherever applicable so that time and energy are optimized and the answer papers look presentable and attractive.
They are also augmented with brainstorming sessions like quizzes, paper writing, poster competitions, and debates, and are involved in various CMEs and events organized by the department.
Research is given utmost importance as it builds not only the students’ knowledge but also makes a great impact on the science of medicine. Each student is guided to publish research works with the help of eminent faculty. They are guided from very basic steps in the form of orientation programs to sensitize them and guided in every step, till the publication of their articles in reputed medical journals. Our various students have published studies collaborating with ICMR and other research organizations.
The Department also takes part in dedicated extension activities organized, like on-site and offsite camps. Camps are organized at outreach centers like PHCs to get specialist level care, for early diagnosis and treatment, and if needed refer to the main hospital for surgeries and procedures. The medicines and surgeries and provided free of cost for the camp-referred patients taking their financial constraints into account. Also, camps are organized with NGOs and relief camps in time for disasters/natural calamities/epidemics, for which the department has a dedicated team to reach patients with full support.
The department also actively organizes awareness programs to reach the society and public. The department hosts various programmers with posters, and demonstrations with the help of undergraduate and postgraduate students. Various faculties both national and international guests are invited to share their views and ideas, and compile them for the benefit of the public as well as to create awareness, such as World Head and Neck Cancer Day, and World Hearing Day, to name a few, where the events are in collaboration with allied departments like the school of audiology and speech, and this is done along with the distribution of free hearing aids, and checkups.
