Among the department, General Medicine plays an important role in graduation.  During the year 2001, under graduate course were started.  This department offers four and a half years with one year of residential internship as compulsory which is affiliated to Vinayaka Mission Deemed to be an University, Salem, Tamil Nadu.  This course has 150 seats per year. The Postgraduation courses of the Department of General Medicine were started during the year 2007. Initially,  the department offered 4 seats for a year and gradually increased to 5 during the year 2013. Currently, the intake of PG in medicine totals to 14 per year. 

The department also helps in conducting Allied Health Science Courses such as Physician Assistant, Perfusion Technician and Dialysis Technician.

The college offers a wide array of academic programmes for students. The highlights of the PG Department of General Medicine include a student-friendly teaching atmosphere that involves didactic lectures, project works, seminars, journal clubs, and inter-departmental society meetings. Regular CME programmes are also conducted that help students gain new insight and strengthen their knowledge and increase awareness regarding the most recent updates and advances in medical care.

The department provides curative services to patient from all over Puducherry and Tamil Nadu with a wide spectrum of diseases. The department conducts health camps regularly in and around Puducherry to reach out and serve the community better.  The department is also actively involves in clinical research and authoring books both in clinical medicine and general medicine. We encourage research work among undergraduates and postgraduates by assisting them to participate in the ICMR challenges. Since its establishment, the department has contributed a large number of publications to peer-reviewed national and international journals.

The department also conducts special clinics every day of the week for headaches, Hypertension, Neurology, Rheumatology and diabetes mellitus. It also offers medications free of cost to patients attending these special clinics. The department supports a variety of super speciality departments such as Nephrology, Cardiology, Rheumatology and Medical Gastroenterology. A 24-hour emergency service including a full-time dialysis unit and CATH LAB facility with 10-bedded ICU infrastructure containing the latest state of the art equipment is also provided. The department also offers a screening programme in the form of a master health checkup for patients. We also cater to various health insurance schemes to provide medical services for the underprivileged.  We conduct various awareness programmes in nearby villages. 

Recently during the covid-19 pandemic a new OPD called “Fever Clinic” was set up on a daily basis for the evaluation of Covid-19 patients.
