Qualifications: MBBS (KMC, Chennai), MS General Surgery (JIPMER), MCh Paediatric Surgery (Madras Medical College), FRCS (Glasgow) 

Dr.V N Mahalaksmi holds a robust academic background, including MBBS, MS, MCh (Paed Surg), FRCS (Glasgow), and the distinction of being a Harvard Macy Scholar, along with a WHO Certificate in Hospital Management. She is currently pursuing FAIMER and serves as the Dean of Health Professions Education and a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at AVMC in Pondicherry. Additionally, she holds the position of Dean of Faculty for Interdisciplinary Studies at VMRF-DU.

Her wealth of expertise and experience encompasses diverse roles and responsibilities, such as co-chairing the MEU and Simulation Centre at AVMC, representing India in the Asia Pacific Consortium for Standardised Patients, and contributing as a program member of the National-level expert committee for the inclusion of Palliative Care Curriculum in MBBS courses. She also serves as a mentor for MEU at BLDE University, holds an executive role in the Simulation Society of India, and is a member to expert committee at RGUHS for the Certified Simulation Technician Program. In the past, she had played pivotal roles as IQAC Co-chair at AVMC, a key member of the VMRF Core Team for NAAC, Controller of Examinations,SBV and Vice Principal Curriculum at MGMCRI in Pondicherry.

In her extensive contributions to medical education, she fronted numerous curricular reforms for both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. These include implementing a systems approach to the transition to online learning, utilizing Learning Management Systems and e-portfolios effectively, creating innovative academic schedules, teaching and learning methods, and designing an integrated modular curriculum for 250 MBBS students. She has also been at the forefront of introducing Standardized Patients in medical student training, establishing formative OSCEs and exit OSCEs for personalized competency maps, and successfully implementing the PG CBME program.

Moreover, her dedication to medical education is evident through her involvement in organizing various MEU activities, such as coordinating, hosting, and moderating over 106 consecutive weekly episodes of the “Forefront of Future Frontiers” medical webinar series. She has also planned and organized more than 160 Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) for MEU, Simulation, and IQAC while serving as a resource person for numerous FDPs and workshops at national and international conferences. She has received five best paper awards at national and international medical education conferences and has organized one international and four national conferences in medical education, along with a national-level consensus-building workshop on OSCE.

Furthermore, her role as a course faculty for Jeeva Raksha and MOOC Course on Academic Leadership development (SBV), along with Simulation-based medical education (KUHS) and four MEU India courses, underscores her commitment to educational advancement. She has also played a pivotal role in setting up the AVMC Skills Lab and Simulation Centre, achieving recognition as an AHA International Training Centre and Jeeva Raksha Training site. Her contributions extend to the realm of publications, including 15 research papers, 12 monographs, and book chapters, along with holding 12 IPR copyrights.

Her deep-rooted interests in medical education encompass outcome-based education, assessment methodologies in medical education, a systems approach to education, and the application of cognitive science principles to enhance the learning experience.
