MBBS is an undergraduate degree in medicine which enables one to register as a medical practitioner and pursue Post Graduate degrees in various fields of medicine. The entire course at VMU is completed in four and a half years followed by one year of internship.


Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes in living organisms. Much of biochemistry deals with the structures and functions of cellular components such as proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids and other biomolecules; although increasingly, processes rather than individual molecules are the main focus. Over the last 40 years biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences from botany to medicine are engaged in biochemical research. Today the main focus of pure biochemistry is in understanding how biological molecules give rise to processes that occur within living cells which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms.

The Department of Biochemistry at VMU has a well-equipped spacious practical laboratory and a modern research lab with equipment like the ELISA reader, auto analyser and flame photometer. There are facilities for performing electrophoresis and the chromatography of chemical samples. The services of the clinical biochemistry lab are attached to the hospital lab and works round-the-clock.


Microbiology refers to the study of life and organisms that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. It typically includes the study of the immune system called immunology. Microbiology is researched actively and is a field which is advancing continually.

The Department of Microbiology at VMU is well-equipped with a student laboratory, research lab, museum, seminar hall, departmental library and microbiology lecture theatre. The diagnostic laboratory including a clinical microbiology laboratory functions round-the-clock and renders the essential services. The diagnostic sections of different branches like diagnostic bacteriology, aerobic and anaerobic culture, microbacterium tuberculosis, mycology and parasitology function efficiently. The virology section has a facility for egg inoculation. The serology/ immunology division has the ELISA reader and spectrometer. This department also monitors the operation theatres for sterility.

M.D-General Medicine

General Medicine is that branch of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and (nonsurgical) treatment of diseases of the internal organs.

In order to extend the best possible treatment to the patients, the Department of Medicine at VMU is equipped with facilities for x-ray, ultrasound, ECG, the cardiac monitor and other latest equipment. The ICCU of this hospital is one of the best in the region with its own centralized monitors, defibrillators and ventilators.


The Masters in Dermatology, Venereology & Leprosy program in VMU is designed to equip the student with some of the latest developments in the study of the structure and functions of the skin and diseases due to microbial agents, infestations, bites and stings. The department has the facility of the HIV diagnostic kit, which is a compulsory requirement for any STD section.

A student graduating from this course has vast career opportunities in both private and public hospitals or can pursue private practice which is in great demand, both in India and other countries.


The Paediatrics Department at VMU caters diligently to the promotion of health and the cure of the diseases of infants and children belonging to the financially inadequate communities of the rural and semi urban areas situated around the campus. The department has well-laid patient services and a spacious beds‛ ward comprising two units, available for inpatient services. It offers excellent services round-the-clock through the NICU. Extra care is given to high risk, newborn babies through the well bay clinical and child guidance clinic. Special health education and rehabilitation services are dispersed to malnourished children.

The Paediatrics Department faculty have a high degree of involvement in imparting intensive teaching and special coaching to the students during the clinical years through lectures, case presentations and monthly clinical discussions.

M.S-General Surgery

The Department of General Surgery at VMU offers specialized surgical care with the objective “early detection of surgical ailments and prompt relief”. The outpatient department of general surgery is located in the outpatient complex. On an average, the outpatient clinic serves about 250 patients every day. The General Surgery Department also offers special services in paediatric surgery.

The General Surgery Department has separate wards for male and female patients. The total number of beds is 120. There are two operation theatres in the Department of General Surgery, possessing of a total of 4 well-equipped operating tables. The General Surgery Department is supported by super specialty services like plastic surgery.


Orthopaedics is that branch of surgery broadly concerned with the skeletal system (bones).

The Department of Orthopaedics at VMU is well-equipped to perform all types of orthopaedic surgeries and manage various types of orthopaedic injuries. The number and nature of operations performed are many. The department has the latest orthopaedic surgical and non-surgical equipment along with a portable x-ray unit. Open reductions and fracture management are performed routinely.

The Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology is full-fledged with modern equipment to perform anthroscopy, total hip, total knee and shoulder replacements, limb lengthening procedures like illizarov, limb reconstruction system (LRS) and interlocking nail for all major bone fractures. The department also performs specialised services like childhood foot deformity correction besides rehabilitation, physiotherapy and weight reduction.


Otolaryngology or ENT (ear, nose and throat) is that branch of medicine and surgery that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the ear, nose, throat and head and neck disorders. The full name of the specialty is otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

The Department of E.N.T at VMU is equipped with state-of-the-art investigative equipment including audiometers. The OPD has its own large demonstration room. The ENT OP has a well-geared audiometry section. It also has as an auxiliary unit and a speech therapy facility.

M.D - Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Obstetrics and Gynaecology are the two surgical–medical specialties dealing with the female reproductive organs in their pregnant and non-pregnant state, respectively, and as such are combined to form a single medical specialty and Post Graduate training programme. This combined training covers the surgical management of the entire scope of clinical pathology involving female reproductive organs, and the care required for both pregnant and non-pregnant patients.

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at VMU is well-equppied with facilities to perform any type of surgery, on account of which various types of gynaecological surgeries are performed in this institution. Pre-natal check up is given priority and the foetus is monitored by ultrasound.

M.D-Radio Diagnosis

Radiology is that branch of science where scientists use x-rays to see the inside of the human body. Radiologists utilize an array of imaging technologies (such as ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT), nuclear medicine, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)) to diagnose or treat diseases.

The Department of Radiology in VMU works during the routine timings while also attending to emergency cases round-the-clock. Technicians are posted for this very purpose. X–ray units, the ultrasound machine and CT scan machine are some of the equipment available in the department. Special investigations like the myelogram, USG and CT guided procedures are also undertaken. There is the regular participation in VINCLISCI (a Clinical Scientific Society) meetings in coordination with the clinical departments.


The Department of Paediatrics and Neonatology at VMU aims to provide comprehensive health care to newborn babies and children of all sections of the society. The hospital has a special care Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and a sophisticated Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) of the highest standard, to provide optimal health care to high risk infants and children with life threatening disorders. Both the PICU and NICU are built with a robust infrastructure and have sophisticated instruments adopting the latest technology.

D.Ortho.(Diploma in Orthopaedics)

D.G.O (Diploma in Obstetrics & Gynaecology)

The Department of Gynaecology & Obstetrics at VMU offers a comprehensive range of services starting from well women check up, menopausal clinic and family planning to highly specialized procedures such as laproscopic hysterectomy, IUI, IVF, TESA, PESA, ICSI and state-of-the-art facilities with excellent new-born intensive care back up.

The center also offers painless delivery, hormone study, bone mineral densitometry, mammography and laser assisted hatching blast cyst culture. It has a world class test tube baby center supported with reproductive technology.
