Thirumuruga Kirupananda Variyar Thavathiru Sundara Swamigal Medical Educational and Charitable Trust was started by our Founder Chancellor Dr.A. Shanmugasundaram in the year 1981 to serve the needy in the society. The trust established its very first medical college at Pondicherry, Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, in the year 2000. Located on the Pondicherry – Cuddalore Road, a national highway, the self-contained and serene campus is spread over 44 acres of lush green lands.
Initially affiliated to Pondicherry University, the institution subsequently came under the ambit of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation Deemed to be University, in the year 2004. The institution offers postgraduate courses in 19 disciplines and Ph.D. programmes across various specialties and interdisciplinary areas. The MBBS programme was started in 2000-2001 and has continued ever since. At present, the annual intake is 150 MBBS and 99 postgraduate students; currently, over 750 undergraduate and postgraduate students are pursuing their studies at AVMCH.
Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital offers patient care, diagnostic, rehabilitative, preventive and pharmacy services. With its fully equipped ICCU, ICU, PICU, NICU and high dependency areas, modular operation theatres equipped with contemporary anesthesia equipment, the broad and super-specialty departments of cardiology, urology, medical gastroenterology, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery and nephrology, AVMC Hospital offers state-of-art tertiary care services to the people of the union territory of Pondicherry and the nearby districts of Tamil Nadu. Various government and third-party insurance schemes are also functional in the system.

The hospital boasts of a well-designed, efficient dialysis unit. Laparoscopy equipment for general and gynecological surgery, ESWL, lithotripsy, PUVA chamber and laser instruments for cosmetic surgery are available for quality patient care services. BARC approved Cath Lab, 1.5 Tesla MRI, 124 slices CT scan, USGs, automated central laboratory services and a state of art virology lab provide round the clock advanced diagnostic services. A fully operational pharmacy, state of art audiology and speech therapy unit, wide range of physiotherapy / rehabilitative care services and a utilitarian blood bank along with dedicated nursing staff and health care professionals provide the necessary support for patient care services. With the additional modern central tower blocks about to be commissioned shortly, the critical care and corporate healthcare services at AVMCH are set to reach a new high in the near future.
Community orientation and service are part of the DNA of AVMC. The three urban and rural health centers and six satellite centres located in the surrounding villages provide a wide range of primary care outreach and extension services. The value statements of the institute are brought to life with the provision of free treatment for all. The institute also provides free food to all in-patients daily. The students get involved in community health all along the way, connecting through the vibrant NSS and RRC units, undertaking Swatchatha and Unnat Bharat missions. The holistic approach to patient care is emphasised by the Centre of Yogic Sciences.
All departments in the college are fully equipped with the necessary infrastructure. The institute has a well-appointed, spacious library with internet, Wi-Fi, audio-visual facilities, an e – learning centre and a virtual digital library. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled for the convenience of staff and students. The min- auditorium can accommodate 250 persons for large group events.
The institute houses a dedicated well-functioning Skills lab and Simulation Centre, which is an International Training Centre for American Heart Association Courses. The centre is also an accredited training site for JeevaRaksha emergency life support courses. A dynamic medical education unit conducts the necessary faculty and professional development activities. Currently, our MEU consists of 4 FAIMER fellows and 5 ACME trained personnel. The scientific forum is a vibrant presence in the institute with its regular academic activities. Two annual endowment orations are being held by the Scientifique Society every year Annual Internal and External Orations. 8 orations have been held so far. Apart from this, all departments conduct periodic CMEs, symposia, guest lectures and other academic events for the benefit of faculty and students.
Research is an integral part of life at AVMC. The Department of Medical Biotechnology under the Faculty of Interdisciplinary Studies with its attached Central Biomedical Research Laboratory with its state of molecular diagnostics provides the necessary support for research. The fully functional Institute Research Committee and Human and Animal Ethics Committee, under the stewardship of the director, medical research , monitor and support the research activities, with focus on multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. To foster research, academic activities and exchange of faculty and students, the institution has built collaborations and linkages with many national and international institutions and universities for academic and research purposes.
In recognition of our efforts in focusing on quality, VMRF deemed to be University is accredited by NAAC, the AVMC hospital by NABH and the virology lab has received NABL accreditation. The university has consistently been featuring in the NIRF ranking and has secured a rank in the band of 101-150 in the year 2020.
Apart from undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. courses in the faculty of medicine, the AVMC campus houses a nursing college, the School of Allied Health Sciences and School of Physiotherapy in its premises, offering unique opportunities for interprofessional education and research.
AVMC is a green campus with over 33% of the available area covered with lush greenery. Environmental initiatives like plastic-free campus, shaded walkways, vehicle free zone, e-cycles for transport within the campus, rainwater harvesting, recycling of waste water and biodegradable waste, solar power, etc. emphasize our commitment to UNESCO’s sustainable development goals. A beautiful spa, well maintained gym, media rooms in the hostels, a serviceable supermarket, ATM, cafeteria and a fast-food joint inside the campus provide the creature comforts for the inmates.
