World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is annually celebrated from November 18 to 24, and the theme for WAAW 2023 is “Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together.” As part of a collaborative initiative between the Microbiology and Community Medicine departments of Aarupadai Veedu Medical College and Hospital, a team led by Dr Nithiya, Medical Officer, visited the Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) at the Anganwadi centre in Chinna Kanganankuppam on November 18, 2023.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) among Primary Health Care (PHC) doctors and the local community. Dr. Niveditta, a Senior Resident in Microbiology at AVMC, followed with a speech elucidating the purpose and significance of the program. As part of this awareness week, a Slogan and Poster competition was conducted on November 20 and November 22, 2023.
The competition was organized with the dual purpose of increasing awareness and promoting best practices to mitigate the emergence of drug-resistant infections. Dr K. Kavitha (Head of Department), Dr Pramodhini (Professor), Dr. Nagavalli Arumugam (Senior Resident), and Dr. Mohamed Asarudeen S (Postgraduate) spearheaded and conducted the competition. The winners were awarded exciting prizes on November 24, 2023.
On November 23, 2023, Dr. Gunavathy (Senior Resident) carried out a Hand Hygiene Mock Drill. As part of the awareness week, a guest lecture on “Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) – One Health Approach” was presented by Dr. Malini A, Professor in the Department of Microbiology at IGMCRI, Pondicherry, on November 24, 2023.
